Background Information: Wiki link! And the quick summary is:
Shionne is cursed (and is worried about the end of the world) and wants to do something about it. She escapes the floating space city of Lenegis with the fire master core, goes to the conquered planet of Dhana with it, links up with a rebellion after some rough starts, and also gets introduced to Alphen. The fact that he can’t feel pain from her thorns continues to bewilder Shionne. They overthrow the first Renan lord, Balgus.
The duo meets up with a mage called Rinwell, and later on a punchy boy named Law. They lose a mentor, defeat a second Renan Lord of light named Ganabelt, and solidify into a group. Also there’s an owl.
At the Earth Realm Elde Menancia, Shionne shoots first and acts questions later, nearly gets crippled for that, and has to rethink her approach. The group manages to get the earth master core from the third lord, Dohalim, with only a small amount of emotional breakdowns, boss fights, and political upheaval. Also, Dohalim and Kisara sign on with the group!
The group then travels to Mahag Saar, aka the Wind Realm. Along the way they meet up with the Water Lord, Vholran, who proceeds to curb stomp the entire party. Shionne tries to defend Alphen and block a sword with her body; this goes about as well as can be expected. Alphen barely manages to drive off Vholran, Shionne barely manages to survive.
Once reaching the Mahag Saar capital, Niez, Alphen punches out a rebel leader who smack talks Shionne and his friends. After being sent on a wild chase by said rebel leader, Shionne is forced to admit her goal; to get rid of her thorns by assembling all the master cores and creating the Renas Alma. She also finds herself growing closer to the party in the process.
The wind lord Almeidrea makes an appearance, does a bit of mass murder in Niez, everyone gets a fresh layer of trauma, and then chase Almeidrea across the sea by boat. Before confronting Almeidrea, Shionne and Alphen share a heart to heart. They even hold hands!
After confronting Almeidrea and getting the wind master core. Vholran makes another appearance; the resulting fight causes Alphen’s mask to shatter, returns his memories, and his ability to feel pain, much to Shionne’s dismay. That bit of trauma leaves her unable to fight back, and she gets abducted by Vholran.
The party then does a lot of soul searching, before going on an asskicking rescue mission into the water realm and storms Del Fharis Castle. They find Shionne in the castle chapel, and after one action sequence manage to snap her out of her BSOD.
The group finish storming the castle, fight Vholran with much better results, and assemble all the master cores to create the Renas Alma. Then everything goes pear shaped, the Renas Alma is stolen (though the group still hangs onto the fire master core) and Shionne finds herself with a fresh set of Maiden powers and a new set of questions.
Personality: Shionne is a mess of contradictions, with her attitude mostly consisting of compassion and sharp edges. Her Thorns cast a shadow over a lot of her behavior, and how she manages her emotions and how she deals with people. Most of her personality is defined by a wry wit and fragile bravado, which in turn masks just how much she’s hurting, or how much she actually cares.
Because Shionne does actually care about people a lot. She’s ready to lay her life down for the greater good, and the sake of others, and for all her snappishness doesn’t hesitate to help. And she isn’t all that keen on causing permanent damage to people.
The idea that she causes pain through touch is almost intolerable for her, and that’s why Shionne keeps her distance. Part of that distance involves pretending to be cold and aloof. She acts like she doesn’t care about people, when that couldn’t be further from the truth. When Shionne does good deeds, she tries to write it off as having an ulterior or a selfish motive. For the first half of the game, she claims that she’s helping other people because it helps HER.
Yet for all of that, she still does the right thing and has an altruistic streak she tries to hide. She won’t refuse people in trouble, she’ll keep vigil over someone she cares about, and if someone is injured she heals them without a second thought.
As for the fragile side of her nature, Shionne tries and act both tough and indifferent. She tries not to let herself look ruffled or flustered, or anything less than composed… The keyword being ‘try.’ Thanks to her limited social skills, it doesn’t take much to throw her off balance; a sincere compliment, or an insightful remark is often enough.
Shionne is unused to genuine praise or compliments; in her prior life on Lenegis, she likely was expected to obey orders from researchers and nothing more, due to being little more than a scientific curiosity thanks to her Thorns. She’s only recently discovered what compliments (and sincerity) are, and while still unused to receiving them, she is slowly gaining an appreciation for them. Even if her reaction mostly consists of either staring in confusion, or trying to brush off the praise in favor of focusing on something else.
Also, she’s food and fashion motivated. So very food and fashion motivated. As in she can eat twelve servings of food and still have room for more. If given an option to try something new, she will absolutely take it. And oftentimes Shionne will forego monetary rewards if she gets something good to eat, the best room in an inn, or the like. Shionne also drops hints about knowing what it’s like to starve or go hungry, though she doesn’t elaborate on it. As a general rule, Shionne tends to hold things in; she doesn’t enjoy talking about herself, whether that’s the past or what’s going on in her head at the present. One of the few ways that Shionne CAN interact with people is noting their fashion; not necessarily in a critical way, but rather picking out what an outfit says about someone, or the craftsmanship behind an outfit. Given that physical contact is mostly off limits for Shionne, this is the closest substitute for it; a way to interact on a physical level in place of touching. Similarly, Shionne places a lot of care over her own appearance and outfits, as that’s one of the few physical aspects of herself she has some control over.
Shionne is also a focused and driven young woman, sometimes to the point of tunnel vision. And a few impulsive acts, such as thinking that taking shots at a Renan Lord in his castle is a great idea, or at least will get her closer to getting what she wants. When she sets goals, she’s ready to do anything to see them through. Even with all the isolation (and lab tests) she’s endured, she’s remained determined through it all… Although that determination sometimes comes at the cost of her patience, or her ability to speak kindly. She starts out as blunt and curt in her interactions; being very direct with what she wants, what she thinks of a situation, and the like. Shionne still has some of that sharp attitude, though she’s beginning to soften around the edges. Being in a party of optimists will do that to a person.
Isolation and loss are her two biggest fears; now that she’s starting to let people into her life, she’s also learning how much it hurts to lose them. Shionne has also had the unpleasant experience of near total sensory deprivation, and she didn’t enjoy it one bit. Neither of those are things she wants to revisit… And there’s also a low grade worry about her Thorns going completely out of control. As it is, she barely has a lot of agency over her curse. Said agency, again, consists of keeping people at arm’s length so they don’t touch her.
The key part of Shionne’s psychology is that she doesn’t like hurting people, or causing pain. This drives her to keep people distant. If she’s prickly and detached and driving people off, that at least means people aren’t getting close enough to get seriously hurt. Or for Shionne herself to get hurt in turn; knowing that the pain caused by her thorns is one thing she CAN’T heal causes her no end of stress. If she hurts people’s feelings by being so distant, then that’s still better than having them get shocked by her Thorns.
At her canon point, Shionne has also just learned that she does in fact care about other people, and just how horrible it is to lose them. So on top of her normal contradictions, she’s having to deal with the idea of letting people get close to her… While also being terrified of what will happen if they get TOO close.
She’s also learned that there are: 1. People who love and care for her, thorns and all, and 2. This fact should not be held against them, and she shouldn’t focus on pushing them away. She’s slowly beginning to learn how to express her feelings, and how to act more honestly. It’s still a work in progress, though.
Abilities & Inventory: - One fire master core that lets Shionne shape fire astral energy into a sword. Has a tendency of setting whoever wields it on fire. Personal headcanon, it also helps boost her fire artes.
- A very fancy dress.
- An equally fancy gun, along with bullets and bombs stored in a hyperspace arsenal.
- Her Curse of Thorns that shocks whoever touches her. Said curse is also comprised of dark/shadow astral energy, despite acting like electricity.
- A ton of artes focused on both dealing damage and healing it.
- An emergency supply of snacks.
Also Shionne’s “can’t die because of her curse” aspect is getting nerfed because that’s a powergaming headache I don’t want to deal with; she bleeds and follows the same KO rules as everyone else.
The game also keeps it nice and frustratingly vague on what being a Maiden entails. Headcanon is that it’s highly dependent on being around the Sovereign, and mostly acting as a counter balance for those abilities, plus invoking and balancing astral energy. It also has the bonus of keeping Shionne’s thorns mostly in check, and limited to only hurting people who touch her.
Suitability & Plans: For basic starters: have Shionne take up a role as a healer in the Reverein Communal Clinic. Patch people up as needed, and act as a medic if it’s required for people’s plotlines. Have her visit ALL the cafes/restaurants/etc and sample as many foods as possible. Give her a chance to relax a little since her Thorns are still present, but aren’t at risk of overrunning the world thanks to her being cut off from her canon and the antagonists there.
On a more advanced level: expand on Shionne’s role as a maiden and incorporate fairy tale motifs into that. Play up how her Curse of Thorns interacts with nightmare energy and the like. Maybe give her an option to eventually mute it using dreamwalking or enchantments of some sort. Explore her background a little bit more since the game plays a little bit coy on that, along with what all being a Maiden entails. I also have a personal headcanon that Shionne read a lot of books during her time as a test subject, some of them based around stories and fairytales. Would be fun to have her live out some of the stuff she’s read!
